Attack of the Fish People
In 1938, on Halloween eve, the radio drama theater company “The Mercury Theater on the air” performed and adaptation of the Book “War of the Worlds” as a radio drama. The next day, every newspaper in the country reported that the broadcast had created a mass panic and terror across the nation as listeners didn’t realize it was a fake news broadcast and thought that the earth was actually being invaded. Newspapers reported that millions of people had fled their homes, and massive rioting and evacuations of cities had occurred. However, these reports were not true.
The play, “Attack of the Fish People” takes place the day after the broadcast of “War of the Worlds”. A small struggling radio station, WBRR, unable to pay their bills, on the brink of being shut down, sees the publicity that the Mercury theater on the air broadcast of war of the worlds has garnered, and comes up with a plan to broadcast their own fake news broadcast in hopes of gaining publicity and saving their radio station. They decide to base their fake news broadcast on the book “Shadow over Insmouth” by H.P. Lovecraft. However, everything backfires when their broadcast results in actual nationwide panic.
A ridiculous comical farce
